For the past thirty years, Dr. Eamon Lankford has been collecting and mapping thousands of placenames throughout County Cork and its offshore islands. The Cork and Kerry Place Names Survey which he established in 1996, is engaged in the biggest collection of previously unrecorded placenames in the state. “Placenames tell us how people viewed and used the landscape over the centuries. They give us insights into our archaeological, historical, geographical and linguistic heritage. They tell us about daily life in times past, customs and beliefs, settlement patterns, agricultural and fishing practices. They enshrine the lore of places which has been passed down for many generations. They are one of the marks that give us an identity of our own.”
